US military aircraft experiences in-flight emergency over East Anglia

An American military aircraft has suffered an in-flight emergency after leaving a US airbase in Suffolk.

The Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker left RAF Mildenhall at 7.30am on Wednesday (April 27) and travelled northeast over Norfolk. It then circled in the North Sea before turning around, reports the Eastern Daily Press.

The aircraft - used for military aerial refuelling - then headed southwest past Mildenhall to Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire before returning to the airbase.

A spokesperson from RAF Mildenhall said: "This afternoon one of our aircraft experienced an in-flight emergency. The aircrew adjusted properly by conducting an emergency landing to ensure the safety of the aircrew, aircraft, and airspace.

"The aircraft landed safely, with no injuries to the aircrew. The safety and well-being of our Service members and their families remains our top priority."

The aircraft is part of the United States Air Force 100th Air Refueling Wing 31 - the only permanent US air refuelling wing in Europe.
