US envoy Gor to visit Bangladesh as Dhaka deepens ties with Beijing

DHAKA: US's special envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor is scheduled to visit Bangladesh on July 30 - the first by a senior US diplomat after PM Tarique Rahman's June tour of China and amid Dhaka's strong engagements in various fields, including trade, economic corridor and defence, with Beijing.

Gor, who is also US ambassador to India, will meet PM Tarique and foreign minister Khalilur Rahman apart from his other engagements in Dhaka, diplomatic sources said. "The relationship between Bangladesh and the US has always been good, and that relationship is getting stronger under the current govt," said state minister for foreign affairs Shama Obaed Islam recently, hoping the visit will bring a new dimension to relations between the two countries.

Sources said the visit aims at giving the US a "clear understanding" of Bangladesh's foreign policy priorities, as Washington remains "concerned" over Beijing's proposal to have an economic corridor connecting Bangladesh and Myanmar.
