Urgent warning for Irish travelling to Spain as extreme weather forecast for holiday hotspots

Irish holidaymakers heading to Spain over the coming days could be impacted by wet and windy weather.

The Spanish Meteorology Agency AEMET has issued a number of weather warnings for rain, storms and wind impacting several holiday hotspots.

Among the alerts is a Status Orange rain warning for Valencia, which is in place until 10am Friday.

A forecaster said: “Accumulated precipitation in one hour: 40 mm. These showers will be accompanied by a storm.”

Other areas currently impacted by Status Yellow rain warnings include Murcia, Barcelona, Girona, Tarragona, Cambrils, Reus, Madrid and Palma.

Irish tourists holidaying in the affected regions are advised to take extra care and follow the advice of local authorities.

Meanwhile, Ireland is set to enjoy its warmest day of the year so far later this week, beating the current benchmark of 21.3C logged on April 16.

Met Eireann says thermometers could soar as high as 22C in some areas today and tomorrow, with temperatures in general remaining in the “high teens or low 20s” for the rest of this week and much of next week.

The national forecaster says explained that high pressure will continue to dominate Ireland’s weather for the rest of this week - and the current signal is for this to continue through next week too. This means lots of settled weather for many, with warm, dry and sunny conditions.

Giving a day-by-day breakdown, it said: “Largely dry Thursday with sunny spells but cloudy at times in parts of the west. The best of the sunshine in the east and south. Top temperatures will range from 17C to 22C, warmest in the south with light to moderate northerly breezes.

“Another dry day Friday with a mix of cloud and sunny spells. Rather cloudy to start with better sunshine later in the day. Highest temperatures of 17C to 21C or 22C with a light northeasterly breeze.

“Cloudy at times on Saturday with the odd shower possible. Mostly dry overall though, with occasional sunny breaks too. Light to moderate northwest breezes. Highs between 16C to 21C or 22C, warmest in the south and southeast with the best of sunshine likely here.

“Somewhat cooler on Sunday with highs ranging from 14C in the north to around 19C in the south. Some cloud with sunny spells, becoming mostly sunny later in the afternoon. Just light northeast breezes.

“Currently looking sunny on Monday. Highs between 17C to 20C or 21C, warmest over the western half of the country and coolest along the eastern coast with a light to moderate easterly wind.

“High pressure will persist through much of next week with little change in our weather. Temperatures for most areas will be around 20C or a little above. Cooler along the east coast due to an easterly airflow.”
