- The Food and Drug Administration has expanded its warning concerning radioactive shrimp, recalling two additional brands due to potential Cesium-137 contamination.
- The latest recalls involve nearly 18,000 bags of Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp and approximately 26,460 packages of Aquastar Corp cocktail shrimp.
- All shrimp brands targeted in the current and previous recalls, including Walmart's Great Value and Southwind Foods products, were initially processed by Indonesian supplier PT Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods), which is now under a full import alert.
- The contamination is believed to have resulted from unsanitary storage conditions at the supplier, with Cesium-137 capable of causing DNA damage and increasing cancer risks if consumed.
- Although no products found in US stores have tested positive for the isotope and no illnesses have been reported, the FDA advises consumers to dispose of any affected shrimp products.
