Latest update on ex-PNE man Tom Barkhuizen's future amid Bolton Wanderers & Derby County links

Bolton Wanderers have made three signings so far this summer and more are sought after the club began its pre-season schedule with a 9-0 victory over Longridge Town.

Wanderers finished last season in League One in ninth place and are seeking to mount a promotion push in earnest this campaign. The club had a successful January transfer window which is aiming to be built upon earlier this summer.

The players began the lengthy pre-season fixture list last night with a big 9-0 win over Longridge on the road. They are next in action on Saturday afternoon for another friendly against Chorley.

Wanderers are seeking quality over quantity this summer. However, the Whites have already made three signings with the capture of defender Jack Iredale from fellow League One side Cambridge United, as well as the return of James Trafford on loan from Manchester City and Conor Bradley joining from Liverpool.

Here, we take a look at the players linked with Wanderers so far this summer.

Tom Barkhuizen

An experienced player who has departed Preston North End and has become a free agent. Tom Barkhuizen's contract expires at the club this summer.

Ryan Lowe has opted to release the attacker, who can operate across the front three. He is now a free agent and can move on to pastures new without a transfer fee.

The 28-year-old attacker racked up more than 200 appearances for North End, scoring 38 goals during his time at the club. He joined from Morecambe in 2015 and came through the youth team ranks at Evatt's former side Blackpool.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Wanderers are one of three clubs seeking to make offers to Barkhuizen for his services. Newly promoted Championship side Rotherham United and relegated Derby County, who will be in League One alongside Bolton new season, are the other two.

But the latest update from the Mirror suggests that Derby under new interim manager Liam Rosenior has lined up Barkhuizen for the Rams. It is suggested that the Pride Park outfit have 10 new players in their sights to fill the ranks of the depleted squad following relegation to League One amid administration.

Barkuizen, midfielder Conor Hourihane and former Stoke City defender James Chester are three names set to be part of the revamp. The trio are said to be 'ready to commit' to the Rams due to Rosenior, who has taken the reigns after Wayne Rooney's depature.

Conor Bradley

Wanderers have set their sights on Anfield youngster Bradley. The 18-year-old hails from Northern Ireland and has eight caps for his country at senior level.

The right-back has also played five times for Jurgen Klopp's side across the Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup. All of these appearances came last season.

A report from journalist Alan Nixon claims Wanderers are 'first in the queue' for Bradley's services and that the potential move would appeal to his appeal to his parent club. That is owing to the close proximity for the Anfield club to monitor Bradley, as well as his chances of regular football.

The Liverpool Echo added Jurgen Klopp's side are considering the move after the approach from Wanderers. The move has since become a reality and Bradley has joined Wanderers on loan for the season.

Jack Tucker

The 22-year-old is poised to join MK Dons this summer. The defender is out of contract at the Gills, who have been relegated to League Two.

The Priestfield side is due compensation for the player, due to Tucker being under the age of 24. The Kent side say the two clubs remain in dialogue over this figure, which will go to a tribunal if an agreement cannot be reached.

According to reporter Alan Nixon on his Patreon account, Reading had tried to sign the defender, while Charlton Athletic also attempted to sign the player, while Wanderers too were also among interested parties. However, the Dons have won the race for Tucker and he will join at the start of July.

James Trafford

The 19-year-old joined Wanderers from Manchester City in the January transfer window, after a loan spell at Accrington Stanley came to an end. He proved to be a hit at Ian Evatt's side, as he became the club's number one goalkeeper in the the second half of the campaign in place of Joel Dixon.

He played 22 times for the Whites and kept clean sheets in his first four games, setting a club record in the process. He also notched two assists in League One.

Talks have been taking place between Pep Guardiola's side and the Whites over a potential return. Trafford has previously said he will leave it to City to decide where the best place to play his football will be next season.

Trafford has since rejoined Wanderers on loan for the whole of the upcoming season to become the second signing of the summer.

Marlon Fossey

The wing-back spent part of the second half of the season on loan at Wanderers from new Premier League side Fulham. Fossey played 16 times and scored once after moving to the club at the start of January.

His loan at the Whites was cut short due to injury following a torn meniscus. He returned to his parent club to recover for the remainder of the campaign.

Like Trafford, Fossey has a year left on his deal at Craven Cottage. Wanderers and Evatt have made no secret of the fact that would like to sign the wing-back this summer.

Championship side Preston North End have been mentioned as a potential rival to Wanderers for Fossey's services. However, LancsLive reports that though PNE has been put to the player as a potential option, there has been no interest expressed on North End's part as of yet.

However, it now appears that Wanderers' pursuit of Fossey has now been drawn to a close owing to Championship interest in the defender.

Conor Carty

The young Wolves forward is 20-years-old and is seeking a new club after leaving the youth team set-up at the Premier League outfit. He did not pick up a first team appearance while there.

Carty is capped at international level for the Republic of Ireland up to under-18 level. He was among one of eight players released by the Molineux side this summer.

Journalist Alan Nixon had reported on his Patreon page that Carty is poised to move to Wanderers. That has since been confirmed for the club's B team along with Connor Stanley and Matty Grivosti.

Jack Iredale

The defender became a free agent this summer after his departure from Cambridge United, where he had been since 2020. It was reported while the season was still ongoing that Iredale had attracted the attentions of Wanderers, as well as Preston North End and Wigan Athletic.

And Iredale subsequently put pen to a paper on a three-year-deal at the University of Bolton Stadium in early May. Iredale became Bolton's first signing of the summer little over a week after their season drew to a close.
