Up to 100 pupils from Ponteland High School self-isolating following confirmed Covid cases

Dozens of pupils from a Northumberland high school have been asked to self-isolate due to Covid.

Between 80-100 pupils from Ponteland High School, on Callerton Lane, were asked to self-isolate after being identified as close contacts, head teacher Kieran McGrane confirmed.

Mr McGrane added that there has been a small number of cases, however the school has decided to "err on the side of caution" and asked any pupils they believe could have been in close contact to isolate.

He added that he has also had to self-isolate after a member of his household tested positive, which he says was detailed in an email to parents last Friday.

Mr McGrane said: "We have between 80-100 children self isolating as close contacts - this is across a school population of 1,200 now that Year 11 and Year 13 are not in.

"I send a weekly email bulletin to parents every Friday. Last Friday I made clear to all parents that I was having to self-isolate because a member of my household had tested positive.

"During the whole year our parents have been very supportive of our attempts to run the school safely. Our planning and provisions have been well received."

Ponteland High School is one of a number of schools across the region to have reported positive Covid cases in recent weeks as the country continues to battle against the virus.
