Unusual name proposed for Bootle regeneration project

Salt and Tar: Made in Bootle is the proposed name for the upcoming canalside events space which is set to be completed next year.

Referring to the town’s rich industrial heritage, with the Brotherton’s Tar Distillery on Hawthorne Road and the area’s historic link to the salt trade. The name has been described by the council as "easy to remember" and "creative".

When tested with more than 100 people, they said the name is "catchy and flows well". The name will be presented to Sefton Council’s Cabinet meeting on Thursday, January 5, 2023.

The project will serve as a multi-functional event, entertainment, and hospitality venue hosting Christmas markets, music events, and comedy shows and is scheduled to be completed for opening in Spring 2023.

Sefton Council submitted a bid to the Government’s Levelling UP Fund in July for £20 million to underpin a regeneration scheme to transform Bootle town centre. The outcome of the fund is expected to be announced in 2023.

The council hopes generating an evening economy through new leisure food and drink uses will increase the time shoppers and visitors spend at The Strand.

Cllr Ian Maher, leader of Sefton Council said: “This new Salt and Tar branding of the site combined with an exciting and developing programme of events for the coming year will help to cement the area’s role and contribute to the revitalisation of The Strand and wider Bootle town centre economy.”
