A man allegedly stole a car from a shopping centre and left its owner unconscious during a confrontation, before leading police on a high-speed pursuit across Canberra.
Police allege the white Volkswagen Golf hatchback was stolen from Hawker Shops about 6.45pm on Friday, July 3.
The vehicle's owner allegedly confronted two people inside the Golf before it was driven away.
The owner suffered injuries to their leg, hands and head, and lost consciousness, police said.
ACT Ambulance Service paramedics treated the alleged victim at the scene before they were taken to hospital.
About 7.35pm, officers located the stolen vehicle travelling on William Hovell Drive in Belconnen and followed it for a short time before activating their emergency lights and sirens.
Police allege the driver failed to stop and instead accelerated away.
A police pursuit was initiated, with the Golf allegedly travelling at excessive speeds through several Canberra suburbs, committing multiple traffic offences and placing other road users at risk.
After briefly losing sight of the vehicle, officers relocated it in Narrabundah. A tyre deflation device was successfully deployed on Hindmarsh Drive before the Golf came to a stop in Garran.
A 23-year-old Duffy man and his partner were arrested at the scene.
Police allege the man returned a positive breath test after being taken to City Police Station. Checks also allegedly confirmed he had never held a driver's licence.
The man, who was subject to good behaviour obligations, is expected to face the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday, charged with driving a motor vehicle without consent, failing to stop for police, aggravated dangerous driving, drink driving and driving unlicensed.
The woman was released without charge.
