University Of Pennsylvania Requests More Police Resources Amid Protests

Demonstrators protest in solidarity with Pro-Palestinian organizers on the Columbia University campus, in New York

Eight days after a pro-Palestinian encampment was established at the University of Pennsylvania, the Ivy League institution has reached out to the Philadelphia Mayor's Office for additional police resources. The university expressed concerns about escalating protest activities and the need to ensure the safety of its community.

The university's statement highlighted the growing crowds in and around College Green, emphasizing the importance of having adequate resources to manage the situation effectively. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker's office has requested further information from the university, which administrators are actively working to provide.

The Philadelphia Police Department has an existing agreement with the University of Pennsylvania Police Department to facilitate cooperation during situations requiring a police presence. However, specific strategies related to ongoing events are not publicly disclosed by the police department.

Recent events at the university have been marked by tension, with a pro-Palestinian rally on Wednesday night leading to incidents of property defacement, the presence of an unauthorized drone, and threatening rhetoric and chants. Subsequent to this, a minor confrontation occurred on Thursday between campus police and protesters near a statue of Benjamin Franklin on the College Green.

While no arrests were made during the confrontation, the heightened police presence underscored the need for increased security measures amid the ongoing protests. The university's proactive approach in seeking additional police resources reflects its commitment to maintaining a safe environment for its students, faculty, and staff.
