UnitedHealth Hits 15‑Month High: Congressional Trades That Suddenly Look Brilliant

Steady Outlook

UnitedHealth Group (NYSE:UNH) shares are trading higher Thursday morning after the company beat analyst estimates and reported guidance ahead of expectations.

With the stock hitting new 52-week highs, here’s a look at the members of Congress who have been buying up shares over the last year.

Congress Members Who Own UNH Stock

UnitedHealth has been the target of Department of Justice investigations and regulatory pressure. The health insurance stock is regularly attacked by members of Congress.

Despite that attention, the stock is also regularly bought and sold by members of Congress, with the Benzinga Government Trades tracking the activity.

Here’s a look at some of the members of Congress who bought and sold UnitedHealth stock since the beginning of the year and if their timing paid off. Some members may still own shares based on the latest filings. UNH stock trades at $433.12 at the time of writing.

Rep. Richard Dean McCormick (R-Ga.)

McCormick bought UnitedHealth stock back on March 19 when shares were trading between $280.07 and $287.55. He later sold shares on June 12 when shares traded between $404.81 to $409.89. While McCormick cashed out with profits, he missed out on more gains over the last month.

Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.)

Salazar bought UnitedHealth stock on April 22 when shares traded between $349.10 and $358.56. The congresswoman later sold her shares on June 4 between $389.82 and $401.38.

Sen. John Boozman (R-Ark.)

Boozman bought shares on June 4 at a price point of $389.82 to $401.38. The senator has not sold those shares, meaning he is sitting on profits of 8% or more.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.)

Khanna has been actively buying and selling UnitedHealth stock this year, with the trades made through a blind trust, according to the congressman. The latest transaction was buying shares on May 15, when the stock traded between $390.25 and $397.63.

Rep. Gil Cisneros (D-Calif.)

Cisneros bought UnitedHealth stock on March 13 when shares were trading between $277.81 and $282.88 and on April 14 when shares were trading between $312.51 and $319.62. Cisneros is currently sitting on shares that are up at least 53% from March.

Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.)

Gottheimer bought UnitedHealth stock on Feb. 5 when shares were trading between $266.29 and $276.89. The congressman’s shares could be up as much as 63% since he bought them five months ago.

Honorable Mention – Markwayne Mullin

Mullin, who previously served in the Senate, is now the Secretary of Homeland Security. The then-senator previously disclosed buying $50,000 to $100,000 in UnitedHealth stock back on Feb. 25. The stock traded between $276.87 and $284.74 on that day. If the former senator is still holding the stock, he is also sitting on some strong potential profits.

While several members of Congress cashed out their UnitedHealth stock in June to take profits, others have held onto their shares and are now sitting on even bigger gains.
