Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri Denies Lockdown Rumours in India

“The global situation remains in flux, and we are closely monitoring developments across energy, supply chains, and essential commodities on a real-time basis,” Puri said, highlighting that the government is prepared to ensure uninterrupted availability of fuel, energy, and other critical supplies. He added that under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, all necessary steps are being taken to manage emerging challenges proactively and in a coordinated manner.

Puri’s statement came shortly after the government announced a reduction in excise duties on petrol and diesel, amid global energy supply disruptions triggered by the ongoing Iran-US conflict.

In a post on X, Puri reiterated, “India has consistently demonstrated resilience in the face of global uncertainties, and we will continue to act in a timely, proactive, and coordinated manner.”

Lockdown Speculation

The rumours of a lockdown gained traction following PM Modi’s recent speech in Parliament, where he referenced the COVID-19 pandemic to highlight India’s ability to tackle global crises. Several social media posts incorrectly suggested that the Prime Minister hinted at a return to lockdowns, prompting searches like “Is lockdown coming back to India” and “India lockdown news.”

However, officials clarified that while the Prime Minister urged citizens to remain “prepared and united, just as it had stood together during the COVID-19 pandemic,” he did not mention the term “lockdown” at any point during his speech. Analysts suggest that confusion arose due to global fuel supply concerns and fuel-saving measures being considered in some countries.

Excise Duty Cuts on Petrol and Diesel

In a significant relief for Indian consumers, the government announced on Friday a ₹10 per litre reduction in central excise duty on petrol and diesel for domestic consumption. Additionally, export duties of ₹21.5 per litre on diesel and ₹29.5 per litre on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) have been imposed to ensure adequate domestic availability, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said.

“This will provide protection to consumers from rising fuel prices. Hon. PM @narendramodi has always ensured that citizens are protected from vagaries of supply and costs of essential goods,” Sitharaman added on X, noting that Parliament has been apprised of these measures.
