Undercover Gardai targeting 'gross criminality' on Dublin Bus, Luas and DART

Undercover Gardai are tackling anti-social behaviour on public transport systems across Dublin.

Assistant Commissioner Anne Cagney confirmed to councillors covert and overt garda operations were being undertaken across the Luas, Buses, Dart, and Trains.

Complaints about anti-social behaviour - such as, drug use, intimation and assaults - on public transport has been rampant with may calling for a separate transport police to be setup.

Independent Councillor Mannix Flynn welcomed the news that he hopes will tackle the "gross criminality" on Dublin's public transport.

He said: "I am very pleased that An Garda Siochana have stepped up to the mark in relation to public transport safety issues and the gross criminality that has been taken place over a number of years on our public transport where drivers and passengers are simply being attacked and left in appalling states.

"All too often, people are reporting attacks to Councillors on the Luas red line and on buses. Many, many drivers feel very intimidated by certain groups.

He said: "So, there is a Garda presence on the public transport as well as a covert presence. So, all those people who think they can smoke dope, shoot up, intimidate people and rob people will no longer be tolerated."

A garda spokesman confirmed to Dublin Live that the operations were being undertaken.

He said: "Gardaí in the Dublin Metropolitan Region carry out both overt and covert operations specifically targeting public transport including Luas, Buses, Dart, and Trains on an ongoing basis to address issues of anti-social behaviour or any other criminal offences."
