Tourists at a game reserve in South Africa must have been astonished to gaze back at their lodge and see an elephant on its roof.
The accompanying footage, captured at Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, shows the giant pachyderm walking from one side of the roof to the other, casually probing the treetops with its trunk.
The footage was shared Thursday on the Latest Sightings – Greater Kruger Facebook page, along with the description: “Unbelievable sighting of an elephant taking a stroll on top of the roof of the Earth Lodge in Sabi Sabi to get a snack!”
Earth Lodge is in Sabi Sabi, which flanks Kruger National Park. Latest Sightings recently established a partnership with Sabi Sabi to share its content via social media.
Nadav Ossendryver of Latest Sightings told For The Win Outdoors that he was not sure what day the footage was captured, but he explained that Earth Lodge is built into a natural slope and that the elephant was not in danger.
“The elephant would have merely been walking from the entrance side of the lodge, onto the roof, without knowing it,” Ossendryver said. “As easy as it got onto the roof, it was just as easy to get off again.”
Still, Ossendryver added, such a spectacle is rarely witnessed.
“They have been known to do this at the lodge,” he said. “But it does not happen every day by any means.”
