'Unbelievable': Farmers over the moon as rainfall tally already triples last year's

The Fox family's property at Coonabarabran has tallied more than 540mm of rain for 2020.

Widespread soaking rain in the New South Wales Central West has upped farmers' confidence for a bumper winter cropping season.

Falls of up to 44 millimetres have been recorded across the region today, with the wet weather set to continue until Sunday.

Some farmers, including Jason McCutcheon from Trangie, have now recorded enough rain this year to triple last year's total.

"The weather patterns have clearly changed — it seems every fortnight we are getting decent falls," Mr McCutcheon said.

"Our country has responded unbelievably well."

Gauges on his property, Mullah, have notched up 95 millimetres for the month of April alone.

Last year 100mm fell in total.

"I've already planted 200 hectares of oats, which is looking fantastic," he said.

"And I'm planning on planting 750 hectares of wheat."

Taking the good with the bad

At his Yarra View property Coonabarabran, farmer Sebastian Fox can hardly believe the turnaround.

This week his year-to-date rainfall tally surpassed 540mm.

Last year he recorded just 280mm, and the year before that just 296mm fell.

Mr Fox said the rain had set-up "beautiful" cropping conditions.

"The rain has come across a couple of gentle days and we've also had a couple of really big storms where we lost a lot of fencing and flood gates," Mr Fox said.

"We take the good with the bad and we're not complaining."

At Cobar, graziers like Donna Cutting were hoping for bumper crops of wheat and oats so they could restock their cattle herd.

She was thrilled to receive 38mm of rain this week on top of 70mm last week.

"We are really wanting to fill our silos back up with grain," she said.

"But we're also looking to sell the excess to help us with cash flow to build our numbers back."
