Unai Emery proven right again as Edu revives Arsenal's transfer plan

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly chasing another of former boss Unai Emery's transfer targets, with RB Leipzig midfielder Christopher Nkunku on the club's wishlist.

The Gunners were interested in the Frenchman's services in the summer of 2019 when Emery was still at the helm, but he eventually made the switch to Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain.

The 22-year-old impressed last season, creating 15 goals in 32 Bundesliga matches for his side who eventually finished third.

And according to German publication SportBILD, the Gunners are among a number of other unnamed Premier League clubs watching Nkunku closely as they look for a creative midfield solution.

However, Leipzig are said to be in no hurry to let him leave and have set a £35 million asking price for their star man.

Another former Emery target, midfield enforcer Thomas Partey, signed for Arsenal on deadline day last month after the club triggered his release clause at the eleventh hour.

It is possible that the north London club view Nkunku as a cheaper alternative to Lyon's Houssem Aouar, who has been one of Arteta's top targets for some time.

Arsenal made an offer for the young playmaker over the summer but it fell short of the French side's £44 million asking price.

The club's general manager Vincent Ponsot previously revealed the details of Aouar's summer saga to L'Equipe.

"We had three big clubs for him. The first one was more for next season," he said earlier this week.

"The second one was related to the departure of a player, and with this club, we could have come to an agreement.

"The third club was Arsenal, who offered below the market value. We discussed it with the player’s entourage, and together we took the decision to say no."
