Umbrella Academy season 3 trailer: Hargreeves siblings face off against the Sparrow Academy

School’s finally back for summer – or should that be, the Academy’s back?

That’s right: the trailer for season three of The Umbrella Academy on Netflix has finally dropped and it promises more time-travelling shenanigans than ever before.

Previous seasons of the show have explored the cross-dimensional storylines of the Hargreeves siblings, who were adopted at birth and have gone onto display superpowers – some of which have almost ended the world, several times.

In season three, the siblings have jumped timelines into an alternate universe where they don’t exist. In their place is another group of Hargreeves: the Sparrow Academy, all of whom have powers of their own.

There’s also another problem.

“We caused a paradox, and that paradox is swallowing things,” Elliot Page’s character Viktor tells his siblings in the trailer.

As it turns out, this means that the siblings have four or five days before they bring an end to existence: so far, so normal. But to make it even more complicated, the siblings also face the prospect of running into their parallel-universe selves.

In addition to this, the trailer shows the Hargreeves clashing repeatedly with their Sparrow Academy counterparts, with scuffles across the family manor and stand-offs between different groups of siblings.

“Will they find a way back to their pre-apocalyptic lives?”, reads the Netflix synopsis.

“Or is this new world about to reveal more than just a hiccup in the timeline?”

Season three also marks the official first appearance of Elliot Page’s new character in The Umbrella Academy – after coming out in December 2020, his character, Vanya, was confirmed last month to have transitioned to male along with Page himself.

Posting on Twitter and Instagram, Page shared a picture of his character sitting alone in a dark bar, captioning it: “Meet Viktor Hargreeves.”

Netflix also confirmed the news, sharing Page’s post and writing: "Welcome to the family, Viktor — we’re so happy you’re here."

Showrunner Steve Blackman has also commented on the shift in Page’s mood since he came out, saying that during filming it seemed there was “a tremendous weight off his shoulders, a feeling of comfort”, adding: “There’s a lightness, a lot more smiling."

The third season of The Umbrella Academy will air on Netflix on Wednesday June 22.
