The remains of more than 2,200 foetuses have been found at the Illinois home of a former abortion doctor following his death.
The family of Dr Ulrich Klopfer discovered the medically-preserved remains while sorting through his property after his death on September 3.
A lawyer for the relatives contacted the Will County coroner’s office to report their shocking findings.
Klopfer is understood to have been Indiana's most prolific abortion doctor, with thousands of procedures performed in multiple counties over several decades, the South Bend Tribune reported.
The doctor had previously run a clinic in South Bend but it closed down when his licence was revoked in 2016.
The license was suspended by Indiana's Medical Licensing Board in November that year after the panel found a number of violations.
This included a failure to ensure the presence of qualified staff when patients received medication before or during abortion procedures.
Klopfer told the panel he had never lost a patient in 43 years of conducting abortions. He said he hoped to eventually re-open his clinics.
The Will County Sheriff's Office said there was no evidence medical procedures were performed at his home.
The coroner's office has taken possession of the remains and launched an investigation.
