Ukraine strikes a dozen more Russian tankers as Putin faces fuel shortages

  • Ukraine attacked a further dozen Russian tankers in the Sea of Azov on Thursday, aiming to disrupt fuel supplies to Russian forces and isolate Moscow-occupied Crimea.
  • These vessels were reportedly used to supply fuel to the Russian military and transport oil and petroleum products, circumventing international sanctions.
  • In the first four days of the week, Ukraine's defence ministry stated that at least 36 Russian ships, including 32 'shadow fleet' tankers, were hit and set on fire in the Sea of Azov and Black Sea, all attempting to deliver fuel to Crimea.
  • Ukraine's persistent long-range drone attacks have caused a significant fuel shortage across Russia, resulting in escalating prices and long queues at petrol stations in various regions.
  • Despite these growing attacks and fuel shortages linked to Ukrainian drone strikes, Russian president Vladimir Putin has affirmed his intention to continue the war.
