UK weather: This week's mini-heatwave will see Britain warmer than Sydney

This week's mini-heatwave will see temperatures soar into the mid-20s, forecasters predict.

Britain will be warmer than Sydney and Los Angeles, with the balmy weather set to last into Easter weekend and beyond.

However, ministers are keen to quell people's urges to head to the nation's beaches and green spaces to enjoy the glorious weather. That's because anyone ignoring the social distancing rules could cause more deaths.

Police repeated warnings that people must not sunbathe or picnic in public, reports the Mirror.

The mercury hit 22C in London over the weekend due to a plume of hot air from Africa, reports the Mirror.

It is now forecast to soar even higher, peaking at 24C today (Wednesday) and Thursday.

Most areas will enjoy above-average temperatures.

The Met Office said: “Over the Easter weekend there should be a lot of dry, settled weather with sunny spells.

“The South should be the warmest and driest, with the greatest chance of rain and high winds in the far North.

And there's more good news. Beyond next weekend this pattern is expected to continue, with dry weather dominating.”

Bristol residents should wake to a cloudy start but sunshine will break through further into the afternoon. Highs of 19C are predicted.

UK weather forecast

Wednesday:

Dry and fine for most and feeling warm. A few heavy showers may develop in parts of southern England. Cloudier over Scotland and Northern Ireland with some spots of rain.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Mostly dry and warm in central and southern areas with hazy sunshine. Turning more unsettled with rain and showers in the north and west on Friday and elsewhere during Saturday.
