UK weather: Snow, gales and freezing temperatures to hit Britain next week

Britain is set to shiver next week as the country prepares to be hit with snow, gales and freezing temperatures.

According to the Met Office , showers across the northwest from Wednesday could turn to snow over higher ground in the north.

And temperatures will plunge to a bitter -2C as winter sets in.

The area will also continue to be unsettled with patches of heavy rain while the southeast may be brighter with some possible sunshine.

Some rain is predicted in the southeast but it is expected to be short lived.

The Environmental Agency has issued nine flood warnings and 31 flood alerts in England, with parts of the South West most under threat.

Tomorrow is forecast to be dry with sunny spells in England and Wales with patchy cloud in western regions, especially during the afternoon.

It will be cloudy in Scotland and Northern Ireland with patchy light rain in Scotland.

Western Scotland will experience gales on Sunday.

The odd shower is possible for northern coast of Northern Ireland.

Cloudy, breezy and wet conditions are likely in the far north-west.

Monday will start mostly dry and cloudy but rain will spread eastwards across all regions during the afternoon, some of which will be heavy.

Saturday

Dry for much of England, Wales and Northern Ireland with sunny spells in east and south England. Persistent rain North Scotland spreading to the Northern Isles later with strengthening winds.

Sunday to Wednesday

Unsettled, mild and windy with rain or showers, which will be heavy at times, especially in Northwest Scotland where severe gales are likely at times.

In the northwest there will be spells of heavy rain and gales with scattered showers that could turn to snow over higher ground in the north.
