Brits are looking forward to some long-awaited September sunshine this weekend as grey skies are forecast to clear and pave the way for sunshine.
The Met Office says it will remain “fairly cloudy” throughout Saturday for most of the country and some southern areas may see sunny spells and temperatures of up to 23C.
But Sunday is expected to be “brighter and generally dry” as clear skies and sunshine are forecast for most areas of the country, while people in Scotland and Northern Ireland are being told to expect spells of heavy rain.
Meteorologist Alex Deakin said: “It will be dry for the vast majority, thanks to high pressure. But a shift in that high pressure does mean that many of us will see some sunnier skies and it will also be turning warmer, especially as we head into next week.
“Higher temperatures are on the way, through the weekend and particularly into next week. Many of us will see some September sunshine.”
He added: “It will be a dry day on Sunday for most, with a bit more sunshine and a bit more warmth.
“Temperatures will be more widely over 20C on Sunday and with the help of a bit more sunshine we could possibly get to 25C.”
The Met Office has told The Mirror that as well as a very warm next week ahead, the end of September is expected to be hotter than anything we saw in August.
The south could be hit by a mini heatwave next week, as a 'Spanish plume' is making its way up to the UK.
The South East will see the best of the weather with warm air being dragged in from the Mediterranean, after a grey and cooler August.
On Monday, London, Kent and Essex could enjoy highs of 27C, while Brighton, Bournemouth and Manchester could see 26C.
A day later the heatwave is expected to spread across the UK, with baking highs of 27C reaching as far north as Newcastle.

A fairly cloudy but mostly day across much of the UK, though some bright or sunny intervals may develop at times for some. Brighter across southern UK though with some good spells of warm sunshine.
Sunday:
Spells of rain, heavy at times will develop over Northern Ireland and much of Scotland during the afternoon. Elsewhere, brighter and generally dry with warm bright or sunny spells.
Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:
Widely fine with sunny spells. Largely dry following overnight rain for some early Monday, although further showers probably arriving into the southwest later Wednesday. Becoming widely very warm, locally hot.
