UK weather forecast: Met Office says Brits set for freezing -4C weekend as sun vanishes

Britain is set to be hit by plunging temperatures this week after a sunny few days to start the coronavirus lockdown.

It is going to feel much colder this weekend, especially on Sunday as northeasterly winds become established across the UK

During Saturday night, temperatures will fall widely close to freezing, with -4C possible in sheltered rural spots.

Temperatures by day on Sunday will struggle to reach double digits, with keen northeasterly winds making it feel colder.

There will be a risk of hail and snow along eastern coasts and inland, although these will become more confined to high ground in the north later in the day.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Dan Suri said: “It will stay drier and brighter elsewhere, even so, it will be a marked change from the 18 or 19 Celsius we have been seeing in a few spots this week.

"This cold, bright weather is due mainly to a high-pressure system that is developing to the west of the UK, which will bring cold air down from the north."

At the start of next week the weather will continue to stay dry and settled with variable amounts of cloud and sunshine, but temperatures will stay cold for the time of year.

The Met Office has reminded people not to be tempted by the sunny weather to defy the Government advice is to only go outside for food, health reasons or work.

Today:

Dry with sunny spells in the south. Cloudier further north and east with showers, these turning increasingly wintry with time. Windy, and feeling cold, especially in the north and east.

Tonight:

Wintry showers across many central and eastern areas with snow falling to low levels in places, though little accumulating. Windy for many. Clearer in the west with a widespread frost.

Sunday:

Further wintry showers across central and eastern parts, becoming confined to the southeast later. Dry with sunny spells in the west. Cold and windy for most.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Dry for many with a good deal of cloud and sunny intervals, chiefly in the west. A few showers likely, mainly in the north and east. Breezy at times.
