UK weather forecast: Baking 23C highs with sunshine mixed with heavy rain and gales this weekend

Brits are set for unseasonably hot weather this weekend with the mercury rising as high as 23C but there will also be heavy rain and gales with 50mph gusts.

A low pressure system has brought unsettled weather with plenty of showers and blustery conditions, mixed with the warm temperatures, over the past couple of weeks.

It has been caused by a jet stream which has a big dip to the west of the UK that is holding the low pressure and also bringing up the warm air from the south.

“On the forward side it is dredging up some very warm air from quite a long way south but with it come a series of frontal systems as well, so while it has been very mild, it will continue to be quite changeable over the next few days with further rain at times,” said Met office forecaster Steven Keates.

“Where we see the sunshine come through on Saturday afternoon it will really be quite a warm one for the time of year 22C, possibly 23C in the London area, that really is exceptional for late October but wherever you are … it will be a very mild day.”

After a mild Friday night with most areas remaining in double figures, there will be rain clouds moving up from the south coast but the east of England could escape the showers and that is where there will be the highest temperatures.

BBC weather forecast Nick Miller: “Another spell of rain moving in overnight and into the morning through Wales and parts of England and actually a little bit cooler first thing compared with Friday morning, some spots in single figures.

"Through the day this rain is moving its way northwards, so through the morning northern England, eventually reaching Northern Ireland and then through the afternoon moving further north through Scotland. Not reaching the far north until the evening when some sunshine hangs on for longest.

"Behind it further heavy showers for northern England, Wales and the south west. Much of the Midlands though, especially through East Anglia and the south east having a fine afternoon and this is where there will be hazy sunshine and temperatures into the low 20Cs - 22C in London compared to an average of 14C."

It is expected to be slightly cooler on Sunday with it being a day of sunshine and showers for most of the country. Where there are showers they are likely to be heavy and could come along with thunderstorms and even hail said Mr Miller.

It is also expected to be windy on Sunday especially in western coastal areas where gusts could reach 50mph.

UK 5 day weather forecast
