UK weather: Fine and dry for many with sunshine in south

PA

The week gets underway with a chilly start after an unseasonably cool night on Sunday and most of the country will wake up to temperatures in the mid- to low-single figures.

But plenty of sunshine throughout Monday brings the promise of warmth to see highs of 23C. The south will get the best of the fine, dry weather, with long sunny periods throughout the afternoon.

Bonnie Diamond, a meteorologist at Met Office, said: “Maximum temperatures of 23C and 24C are most likely in the southeast of England, where there will be a combination of light winds and strong sunshine.”

Cloudy spells and lower temperatures of around 15C to 19C are expected during the day in northern parts, particularly in Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England, as are scattered showers that could turn heavier.

Most of England and Wales are likely to avoid any passing drizzle.

Ms Diamond said: “There will be sunny spells in between any showers, but for the likes of western Scotland we could see some heavier showers developing later today.

“But some of the showers will be hit and miss, so these parts could see a decent day of sunny spells as well.”

The wet weather will move on by the evening and most of the UK will have another dry, clear, fresh night.

Ms Diamond said: “It’s quite a cool air mass so temperatures will be chilly this evening and overnight for this time of year.

“Temperatures could fall into the single figures for much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England, even in southern parts it will feel on the chilly side.”

Fine weather and warm sunny spells are expected nationwide on Tuesday, although showers may remain across Scotland.

It will be much of the same in England and Wales on Wednesday, but Scotland and Northern Ireland will likely face cloudier, wetter weather.
