UK weather: Experts say hot African plume could bring scorching heat back to Britain

Britain could soon be enjoying another heatwave with reports an African plume will head towards the country next month.

The West Country basked in high temperatures last week, with the mercury rising close to 30C before the weather turned cooler.

And forecasters are now warning that temperatures could rise once again - in just a few weeks.

The first half of August will see changeable weather, with a mixture of sunny spells and showers.

But it's expected the second half of the month will be dominated by high pressure, with more settled, drier and warmer conditions, experts say.

The Met Office said: "There would still be a risk of showers or thunderstorms at times.

"Temperatures are most likely to be above average."

Meteorologist Stephen Dixon said: "It's too early to say if we will have another heatwave in August, but by mid-August there are signals of high pressure bringing drier and warmer air.

"Temperatures will be above average, but the average temperatures for England in August is 21C so still too early to know if it will become a heatwave."

AccuWeather forecaster Alyssa Smithmyer said hot air from Africa could send temperatures rising once again in August.

She told the Express: "As we move forward through the remainder of July, temperatures are anticipated to shift closer to normal for this time of the year.

"During the first week of August, temperatures are expected to likely do the same and return to near normal, with a few slightly warmer days possible later in the week as the jet stream influence transports some warmer air from Africa."

The Met Office issued two yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms today, covering North Wales, the Midlands, northern England and Scotland.

The warning in Scotland is in force from midday to midnight, while the one in England and Wales begins at 9am today and ends at 6am tomorrow.

Experts said that as much as 30mm of rain could fall in as little as one hour and that some places could see 60 mm in a few hours.

In the South West, storms could hit throughout Tuesday afternoon.
