UK weather: Brits wake to start of heatwave as temperatures soar higher than Morocco

Parts of the UK can officially start packing up those umbrellas as June's heatwave prepares to bring highs of 32C this week.

The  Met Office  is forecasting boiling temperatures for most of the country over the next week, with highs above those in Croatia and Morrocco.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Martin Young, said that by the middle of the week, Brits will see temperatures climbing across much of England and Wales.

He said: "It will probably be hot in parts of southern and eastern England, as temperatures peak close to 30 Celsius.

“It’s possible Northern Ireland and Scotland will join the rest of the country in seeing a spell of warmer weather later next week, as this hot air from the continent extends northwards across the UK."

However, Martin added that the warm blast may bring further thunderstorms for the UK.

He said: “We’re keeping a close eye on the possibility of severe thunderstorms developing later next week too, triggered by the warm continental air.”

Britain is almost certain to beat its hottest day of the year, the 28.9C on May 29 at Dawyck, Scottish Borders, and be comfortably hotter than the 25C or 26C forecast in Gran Canaria or the 28C on Tenerife this week.

The BBC says the mercury could hit 32C in London on Friday, with five successive days of 27C or higher on the cards.

Temperatures in Manchester will also hit 27C from Wednesday onwards.

However, destinations further up north should be prepared for more wind and rain before the warm weather starts to break through.

Today:

Northern Ireland and Scotland will be windy with some rain at times, especially for hilly western areas later. Some of this damp, breezy weather brushes northwestern parts of both England and Wales but elsewhere mainly sunny and warm.

Tonight:

Northwestern parts will be largely cloudy and mild, with occasional rain or drizzle, while much of the south and east remains mostly clear. Perhaps a little chilly by dawn.

Tuesday:

Rather cloudy with occasional rain, perhaps heavy, for northern areas where temperatures will be lower. England and Wales, away from western and northern fringes, should be sunny and very warm.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Cloud and outbreaks of rain for northwest at times. Elsewhere, dry, sunny and becoming hot inland. Increasing risk of thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday.
