UK weather: Brits to bake in temperatures up to 34C in hottest week of the year

It's officially time to get out the sun cream as the UK is set to sizzle this week in temperatures higher than Ibiza.

The south of the country will be the hottest spot this week - but much of the UK will enjoy temperatures much higher than the June average.

Yesterday, Met Office forecasters issued a two level-two heat alert for the whole of England.

The alert is triggered as soon as the risk is 60 per cent or above for threshold temperatures being reached in one or more regions on at least two consecutive days and nights.

"This is an important stage for social and healthcare services who will be working to ensure readiness and swift action to reduce harm from a potential heatwave", the Met Office said.

Met Office chief meteorologist Dan Suri said: "Temperatures will continue to climb through the week with a hot spell developing across much of England and Wales.

"From Wednesday temperatures will widely reach into the high twenties Celsius and it'll be hot across much of the UK, especially central and southern England where we could see highs of 30C (86F) to 34C (93.2F).

"This hot weather is expected to last until at least Friday and so heatwave conditions are likely to develop for some areas this week."

For the rest of the UK, there will be some rain and drizzle up in the northwest, however this is expected to fade by late Tuesday.

Northern Ireland and western Scotland will experience patchy rain, which will later die out and join the rest of the country in the sun.

Today:

Cloudy across the NW half of the UK with some rain or drizzle at times. Mostly sunny elsewhere and becoming very warm by the afternoon.

Tonight:

Remaining cloudy in the northwest with further rain or drizzle at times. Clear skies elsewhere with the odd fog patch forming by dawn.

Wednesday:

Patchy rain across Northern Ireland and western Scotland dying out, cloud breaking during the afternoon. Hot and sunny elsewhere.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Mainly fine, hot and sunny Thursday, isolated thunderstorms in Scotland. Hot and sunny in East Friday, thunderstorms spreading from the W. Storms clear Scotland Saturday, then sunshine and showers, fresher.
