UK weather: Atlantic jetstream with '38C temperatures' forecast to hit South West

A jetstream crossing the Atlantic from North America could bring 37C to the South West and parts of England at the beginning of July, latest long-range forecasts show.

Netweather’s jetstream forecast predicts hot air could Northern Africa and Western Europe could drift across the South of England, from June 27-29.

The latest modelling reveals this stream, with temperatures exceeding 37C, could then move east over central Europe and Scandinavia, before more searing temperatures arrive from the USA just a week later.

If the latest modelling proves accurate, the South West could see record temperatures for two weekends in a row.

As the hot air from Africa and Western Europe moves across and away from the UK, the jetstream will start to make its journey of more than 4,000 miles to the UK.

Come Thursday, July 1, a band of ‘red’ will fast approach the South West coast and by the following Sunday, large swathes of the Westcountry and south of England could see blistering temperatures.

Netweather said of the start of July: “There is a signal for pressure to become relatively high to the east of the UK which may result in rather warmer weather establishing especially in the east of Britain, with winds blowing from the south or south west, and potential for thundery outbreaks.”

The forecasts will no doubt be welcomed following a wet spring and a damp end to June following widespread thunderstorm warnings for England and Wales.

Whether these temperatures will be experienced remains to be seen, but weather forecasting agencies predict more balmy weather us on the horizon.

The Met Office’s long range forecast for June 26-July 5 says there could be mixed conditions across the country, “with temperatures at or slightly above average for the time of year.”

The Met Office forecast, for Saturday, June 26 to Monday, July 5 states: “Saturday will likely start cloudy in the south with outbreaks of light, patchy rain tending to brighten up through the day, however with a risk of heavy showers during the afternoon.

“Elsewhere will likely be dry with some sunny spells, light winds and temperatures mostly near normal. Then, predominantly dry weather is likely, but with briefly more unsettled spells of rain or showers for southern and eastern parts, alongside more prolonged rain for the northwest of the UK.

“Winds are most likely remaining light to moderate throughout, with temperatures at or slightly above average for the time of year. Confidence decreases later into the period, however, there's a chance of high pressure building for a time, likely bringing further periods of settled weather interspersed with brief more unsettled spells.
