RAF Typhoon jets scrambled to intercept two Russian aircraft off Scottish coast

UK fighter jets have intercepted two Russian aircraft off the Scottish Coast after they entered a 'controlled zone'.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said that the RAF Typhoons, which are based at RAF Lossiemouth, were scrambled earlier today after the Russian aircraft entered 'the UK's controlled zone of international airspace'.

The Russian planes were identified as TU-142 Bear F maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft.

The MoD spokesman added that monitoring the zone ensures the safe passage for all other aircraft, including civilian transatlantic airliners that are under UK civilian air traffic control.

The Quick Reaction Alert Typhoons are currently based at former RAF Leuchars.

This is now the British Army's Leuchars Station, the home of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.

In July Boris Johnson's Union Jack daubed warplane was scrambled along with a team of UK fighter jets to warn off a Russian air-force formation.

The Ministry of Defence said no interception was required during the operation and the Voyager made a return to its base at RAF Brize Norton, in Oxfordshire.

The refuelling and transport plane – also used by the PM and the royals – was re-designed at a staggering cost of £900,000 so it can advertise the UK on global travels.

The attempted Russian approach in July was by a team of Moscow's long-range “Blackjack” bombers, which are used as spy planes, to test UK responses to air incursion.
