UK travel rules explained after plans for 'amber watchlist' scrapped

The government has abandoned controversial new plans to introduce an amber watchlist.

The proposals were designed to warn holidaymakers that countries with concerning coronavirus data could be placed on the red list at short notice.

Plans for the amber watchlist faced a backlash from MPs and figures in the travel industry as it was set to threaten trips to European hotspots such as Italy and Spain.

But Boris Johnson last night scrapped the proposals and pledged to keep travel rules as simple as possible.

The Prime Minister has said a 'balanced approach' was necessary and Ministers are now set to carry out a review meeting for the rules on Thursday.

Until any new announcements, this means the existing red, amber and green traffic light system is set to continue.

Travel rules for red list countries

UK travellers must not travel to any countries on the red list as these are places currently experiencing a high level of positive Covid cases.

If you have been in a country or territory on the red list within the last 10 days, you will only be allowed entry into the country if you are a British or Irish National, or if you have residence rights in the UK.

Before your travel, you must be able to show a negative Covid-19 test, complete a passenger locator form and quarantine for 10 days at a managed hotel - at a cost of £1,750 for solo travellers.

Travel rules for amber list countries

Before arriving to England from a country on the amber list, you must take a Covid-19 test in the three days before returning to the country.

You must also complete a passenger locator form and quarantine at home or the place you are staying for at least 10 days. You also need to pay for two Covid-19 tests which should be be taken on or before day 2 - and from day 8 after you have arrived home.

However, if you have been fully vaccinated in the UK, US, many European countries - or under a UK vaccine programme overseas - then you will not need to quarantine or take a day 8 test after you arrive in England. Under-18 who are British residents or from somewhere with a UK approved vaccination programme, you will also be exempt from having to quarantine or take a day 8 test.

Travel rules for green list countries

Before travelling to England from a green list country, you must take a Covid test and complete a passenger locator form. Once you arrive back you must take another Covid-19 test on or before day 2.

You are only required to quarantine if you test positive or are pinged by NHS Test and Trace App.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is set to issue an update of which countries will be moved onto the green list and which will face tougher quarantine restrictions on Thursday.
