UK's high death rate partly down to old, obese population says minister

A Government minister has said part of the reason UK has such a high death rate from Covid-19 is because the general public is older, and there is a high level of obesity.

According to Statista the UK has the third highest death rate per capita from Covid so far - after Belgium and Slovenia.

According to the data gathered by Johns Hopkins University - the UK has the fifth highest total number of deaths in the world from coronavirus, at just under 100,000 so far.

The Office for National Statistics says the number with Covid recorded on their death certificate is higher.

The UK is behind the USA, Brazil, India and Mexico for the total number of deaths.

Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey was asked on Good Morning Britain why the UK's numbers are so high.

Responding to Piers Morgan she said: "There'll be a variety of reasons why people, unfortunately, have died due to this.

"Some of that will be recognising the age of our population, some of that will be recognising the obesity of our population."

Piers praised Ms Coffey for giving an answer as to why deaths were higher, saying other ministers had been unable to do so.

But he asked her if she was saying it was the public's fault for being too old and too fat.

She added: "There's a variety of factors which will have lead to people sadly being ill during this time, sadly that translating into deaths."
