UK motorists will need to display a GB sticker when driving in Ireland after Brexit

UK motorists will need to display a GB sticker on their cars when driving in Ireland after Brexit, the UK government has announced.

New government advice says motorists from the UK will need the sticker in all EU countries after the UK's departure - even if their number plate has a GB logo.

The advice will also apply to cars registered in Northern Ireland, the BBC reports.

The change has come under fire by some who say the advice is nothing but "red tape".

5 ways you'll be affected if the UK leaves the EU with no deal

Seamus Leheny, from the Freight Transportation authority, said around 165,000 goods vehicles and trailers would need to head to the "frivolous cross border rules and red tape", adding that the advice is "utter nonsense".

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin MP for West Belfast, Paul Maskey, said he would not be displaying one of the stickers on his car.

He wrote: "I'm Irish, my car is French and there will definitely be NO 'GB' sticker going on my car."

The advice also warned that people taking UK-registered vehicles abroad will have to carry additional paperwork proving ownership of the vehicle and may need to obtain an international driving permit.
