UK coronavirus cases hits highest daily total since May with 1,700 positive results confirmed

More than 1,700 people have tested positive for coronavirus.

The Department of Health has announced that 1,715 people, as of 4pm on Sunday (August 30), have had a positive result.

This is up 607 on Saturday's number and thought to be the highest daily confirmed total since May 28.

One more person has also died with coronavirus within the last 28 days.

This is the lowest daily increase in over a week.

A total of 41,499 people have now died, the Department of Health has announced.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been 57,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

NHS England said on Sunday that a further three people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in hospital, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 29,550.

The patients were aged between 51 and 93 and all had a known underlying condition.

The dates of the death were all on or after August 26.

Another three deaths have been reported with no positive Covid-19 test result.
