UGA football coach Kirby Smart talks Stevenson-Simmons incident, ongoing off-the-field issues

The past month has been a rough one off-the-field for the Georgia football team after four separate trouble-related incidents.

Defensive back Latavious Brini, linebacker Jaden Hunter, defensive back Tyrique Stevenson, and wide receiver Tyler Simmons were all charged for separate events that included slapping a man on the head, driving with a suspended license, and getting into an altercation at a bar in downtown Athens last weekend.

Stevenson and Simmons were both charged early Sunday morning for altercations at the Silver Dollar Bar but according to Coach Kirby Smart, they were not together.

Smart provided a full statement on the matter after practice today and the recent trouble within the program which Seth Emerson shared via Twitter.

“Obviously, I’m extremely disappointed. There’s a standard of behavior that’s expected of student-athletes at the University of Georgia and that’s not indicative of the behavior we want at the University of Georgia,” said Smart.

The fourth-year head coach mentioned that Stevenson and Simmons will be disciplined for their actions and also noted the importance of getting the team back on track outside of football.

“We’ve got to find a way to make better decisions as young men, especially if they’re going to represent this university.

Smart acknowledged the fact that players go downtown to enjoy themselves occasionally but he has no control over it.

“Look, our kids go downtown. We know they go downtown, but when you go downtown, you’ve got to behave. You’ve got to act the right way, follow and be law-abiding citizens.”

The Bulldogs have three and a half more weeks of practice before the annual G-Day game on April 20th.
