UFC 257: Conor McGregor defeated but Joanne Calderwood does Kilmarnock proud

Joanne Calderwood did Kilmarnock proud yet again on one of the biggest stages.

The UFC star from the town fought on the same card on Saturday as Conor McGregor who was knocked out for the first time by Dustin Poirier.

But Joanne had the opposite result in her UFC 257 bout as she picked up an impressive victory against Jessica Eye.

It was a dominant performance from the Killie fighter who burst open the face of her opponent in the final round.

Jojo dominated the fight from start to finish against the No 6 ranked fighter in her division.

She mixed it up well, with the front kicks doing the damage among her other impressive strikes, it was a perfect MMA performance.

After the fight she said: “It felt pretty damn good winning that one, it was a good three-round fight.

“There was a lot to overcome going into it so I am happy I got a win.

“The crowd that were there were great and they were supporting me, I can’t explain how good that feels, it makes me emotional thinking about it.”

Jojo added: “Jessica is a bully, that’s what she tries to do inside and outside the octagon.

“You can maybe bully me outside, but as soon as the door closes, it’s a whole different ball game because I am in the zone and no one can hurt me.

“When I am feeling good and I let my body do the work, I know I put on a good fight.”

Jojo was set to fight Valentina Shevchenko for the flyweight title, but the champion got injured and pulled out of the fight.

So her next goal is to get back into a position to make that fight happen.

She said: “I think I owe it to everyone to fight her now, I let it slip through my hands after she got injured.

“I am a fighter, I want to stay active as that’s when I am at my best.

“I want to get into the top five now and hopefully get that title fight I was meant to get before.”
