UEFA to speak to fans about playing league games abroad

  • UEFA has postponed its decision on whether to permit European domestic league matches to be played overseas, opting instead for a consultation period with all stakeholders, including fans.
  • The European football governing body considered proposals for La Liga's Villarreal v Barcelona to be played in Miami and Serie A's AC Milan v Como to be staged in Perth, Australia.
  • Fans' groups, notably Football Supporters Europe (FSE), have voiced strong opposition to these plans, comparing them to the controversial European Super League.
  • UEFA stated its desire to gather views from all parties before making a final ruling on this “important and growing issue”, acknowledging its responsibility to consider all factors.
  • While LaLiga and Serie A advocate for overseas matches to boost global exposure, the Premier League has confirmed it has no current plans to stage games abroad.
