The United Arab Emirates registered on Friday 553 new coronavirus cases, raising its total to 16,793.

The health ministry added that nine fatalities were reported, taking the count to 174.

Total recoveries have risen to 3,837 after 265 more patients were declared to have overcome the infection.

The UAE had started to ease lockdown measures imposed more than a month ago to combat the outbreak.

Malls, dine-in restaurants and cafes in Dubai, the UAE’s business and tourism hub, had resumed operations with limited capacity. Shoppers must wear face masks and gloves and keep their distance.

Other public venues such as schools, mosques and cinemas remain closed in the UAE. It had also relaxed a nationwide curfew, first announced on March 26, with the start of the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan on April 24.

Oman, meanwhile, reported 154 more coronavirus cases, raising its total to 3,112.

The Sultanate has confirmed 1,025 and 15 deaths from the disease.

Last week it allowed a limited number of commercial businesses to reopen, including money exchanges, car and fishing boat repair stores, and shops selling electronic goods.

'Total curfew'

Kuwait will enact a “total curfew” from 4 pm on Sunday through to May 30 to help to curb the spread of the new coronavirus, the Information Ministry said on Twitter on Friday.

Further details of the curfew will be announced soon, it said.

Kuwait on April 20 expanded a nationwide curfew to 16 hours a day, from 4 pm to 8 am, and extended a suspension of work in the public sector, including government ministries, until May 31.

On Friday the Gulf state announced 641 new coronavirus cases and three deaths, bringing its total number of confirmed cases to 7,208, with 47 deaths.

Qatar, meanwhile, confirmed 1,311 new virus cases and the recovery of 84 patients. This raises the total recoveries to 2,370.

The country has reported 12 fatalities.

The health ministry said it has tested 120,458 people, with 3,963 in the past 24 hours. A total of 20,201 have tested positive. They include 17,819 active cases.
