MUMBAI: The applecart has been indeed turned topsy-turvy. USA were put out of the U-17 Women's World Cup when they lost 3-4 in penalties to Nigeria after the game ended 1-1 after 90 minutes on a dramatic day which saw the match starting 110 minutes late due to thunder showers.
Riley Johnson, who marshalled her forces brilliantly from deep in the midfield, saw her penalty being saved by the substitute Nigerian goalkeeper Chikamso Jiwuku. Nigeria progress to the semifinal in Goa from a contest where they clearly were not favourites considering the reputation USA carried after their group stage exploits. Nigeria scored from a penalty in the 26th minute. USA replied to that goal 16 minutes later through Amalia Villarreal.
