Tyson Fury visits local pub to borrow a beer glass during coronavirus lockdown

You could have knocked landlord Bill Johnston down with a feather when boxer Tyson Fury turned up at the door looking for a beer glass.

The heavyweight champ asked Bill if he could buy a glass “with a widget at the bottom” to replace one he had broken.

The widget is the crucial nucleation point at the base of a glass that helps release a steady stream of bubbles.

Fury, 31, offered to pay, but Bill asked for a selfie, with him two metres back, instead.

Posting the shot online, Bill wrote: “When the heavyweight champion of the world knocks on the door to the pub to ask for a couple of glasses. Random! Nice guy – and Tyson said he’ll be calling in when we re-open.”

Fury took the WBC heavyweight champion title from Deontay Wilder in February.

His visit was a boost for Bill, who has been self-isolating at The Canal Turn pub in Carnforth, Lancs, since his wife Victoria came out of early retirement to return to frontline work in the NHS.

The pub is lit up in blue every evening in support of Victoria and all the other NHS heroes.

Bill said Fury, who lives in nearby Morecambe, was out for a run when he stopped to ask for the glass.

Bill said: “Was happy to help then he just jogged off again the two or three miles home.”
