Tyson Fury given deadline by WBC after retirement announcement

Tyson Fury has been given a deadline to relinquish his WBC championship belts and it's expected other organisations will follow suit - meaning he'll be forced to give up all of his belts if he is to retire.

After teasing a comeback fight against Dereck Chisora, Fury quickly U-turned and decided to 'walk away' from the sport after making the announcement on his 34th birthday.

Fury had originally called time on his boxing career after defeating Dillian Whyte at Wembley in April, when he announced that he would not fight again.

However after remaining in training and not giving up his belts, many had assumed he would indeed comeback while the Gypsy King stated his intentions to fight Chisora, as well as Anthony Joshua at Wembley.

Now Fury has stated that he will retire, he has been told he has just 11 days to relinquish the WBC belt.

Mauricio Sulaiman, the WBC president, said: "I just had a beautiful video conference with Tyson Fury on his 34th birthday. I am very proud of him. He has confirmed retirement, to go out as a champion, as a family man with money and with a great future.

"We had communication with his promoter and we gave him more than 10 days, until the 26th, to confirm in writing if it is a final decision and in that way, proceed and address the issue. He has been a great hero in and out of the ring."

This will mean that Fury will still hold the belt during Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk's fight this weekend. The Ring Magazine belt has already been relinquished by Fury, and will go to the winner of this weekend's bout in Saudi Arabia.
