Tyrone call up trio of U20 stars to senior squad ahead of Armagh showdown

Tyrone have called up three members of their All-Ireland U20 winning team to the senior squad ahead of next Sunday’s crunch Qualifier tie with neighbours Armagh.

Captain Niall Devlin (Coalisland), fellow defender Steve Donaghy (Moy) and midfielder Michael McGleenan (Eglish) have been called up to the senior panel by managers Feargal Logan and Brian Dooher.

However, attacking star Ruairi Canavan, brother of current senior panellist Darragh, has not been called up yet.

Canavan was man-of-the-match in both the All-Ireland semi-final win over Kerry and the final victory over Kildare and was named EirGrid U20 Player of the Year earlier this week.

The Errigal Ciaran ace scored 0-8 in the Kerry game and went even better in the decider, posting a haul of 1-7 which included a goal after just 20 seconds in Carrick-on-Shannon.

However, Canavan, like a host of this year’s All-Ireland squad, will still be U20 next season.

Wing-back Devlin kicked three points from play in the final while Donaghy and McGleenan have also impressed throughout Tyrone’s Ulster and All-Ireland campaigns.

It remains to be seen if any of the trio will make the match-day panel for next Sunday’s showdown in the Athletic Grounds.

The Red Hands, who lost out to Derry by 11 points in their Ulster SFC quarter-final, are without All-Star midfielder Brian Kennedy following his straight red card in Omagh.

However, Trillick duo Mattie and Richie Donnelly are expected to be fit having missed the defeat to Rory Gallagher’s men.
