Tyrell Malacia delivers verdict on Cody Gakpo amid Manchester United transfer links

Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia has delivered a glowing assessment of international teammate Cody Gakpo amid ongoing reports linking the attacker with a move to Old Trafford.

Gakpo, who has scored three goals in four appearances at the World Cup in Qatar for the Netherlands, is continuing to be heavily linked with a move to United ahead of the transfer window opening in less than a month's time. The PSV Eindhoven star, who has plundered a very impressive 13 goals for the Dutch outfit already this season, as well as registering 17 assists, was the subject of interest from United during the summer.

Gakpo recently admitted that he held talks with United manager Erik ten Hag and was 'close' to sealing a move to Old Trafford. He was also the subject of interest from another Premier League club during the summer.

Since holding those talks with Ten Hag during the summer, the winger has gone from strength-to-strength this season, becoming one of the most sought-after players in Europe. He has taken his club form onto the international stage, too, highlighted by his recent exploits at the World Cup, scoring in each of the Netherlands' three group-stage fixtures, finding the net against Senegal, Ecuador and Qatar.

His form has only increased speculation about his future and the prospect of joining United, who continue to be constantly linked with his signature. But if the Reds do make an official approach for him next month, it would likely win the seal of approval from left-back Malacia, who is currently on international duty with the PSV ace.

"He's good enough for the top, there's no doubt," Malacia told The Athletic.

Despite the increasing speculation, Gakpo, in the aftermath of the Netherlands' 3-1 win over the USA in the last-16 on Saturday, refused to comment on his future, insisting his current focus, understandably, is on events in Qatar. The Netherlands face Argentina in the quarter-finals on Friday.

"I have to be honest, I am not thinking about that now," said Gakpo, addressing his future. "I am focused on the tournament and want to keep performing well, to keep helping the team.

"Hopefully, when we become world champions we can think about other things. I try to keep focused and the other players don't really speak about that kind of thing."
