Tyne Tees host Rachel Sweeney gets send off from Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway on last day

Tyne Tees presenter Rachel Sweeney admitted to getting very emotional after receiving a message from Good Morning Britain hosts Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway on her last day.

Rachel has been a well known face on the regional news for close to a decade, and been with ITV for 13 years, waking many people up with early morning bulletins.

But she's now off to pastures new to be North East correspondent for soon to be launched channel GB News.

Announcing news of her new job last month, County Durham journalist Rachel posted: "After 13 very happy years at ITV Tyne Tees – especially the last 9 presenting the regional news throughout, I am turning my 3.30am alarm off to join the team at GB News.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to say I’ll be North East reporter.”

She had one last 3.30 alarm on Friday as she presented her final breakfast bulletins and, before they crossed to local news updates, GMB hosts Ben and Kate took the time to honour Rachel in front of a national audience.

Ben said: "We're sending you all our love Rachel," before adding, "I've met Rachel on a couple of occasions up in the North East, she's a wonderful character, a great mum and really will be missed by those in the region."

Reacting to their message, Rachel tweeted: "THANK YOU @GMB for this lovely send off! @benshephard @kategarraway @errongordon. I am very emotional! I have loved every shift. Thank you for everything xxxxx"

Ending her final bulletin, Rachel thanked Tyne Tees viewers, saying: "I just want to say a huge thank you for your company over the last nine years. It's been an absolute pleasure to be there when you wake up with the morning headlines.

"Thank you for your conversations, support and early morning tweets; you really have kept me going.

"So that really is it from me, for now"
