Tyne row challenge launched to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

A Tyneside gym is (th)rowing its weight behind October's Breast Cancer Awareness Month - by 'rowing' the River Tyne. Members of Apex Pro Fitness, based in Shiremoor, will take to the gym's rowing machines in hourly slots throughout Saturday, October 8 (9.30am onwards) and between them attempt to cover 118km - the length of the Tyne.

The gym has previously raised cash for the likes of Maggie's Cancer Care and the Bay Foodbank, and this event is in support of Positivity Pink, which promotes wearing pink on October 21.

October is Breast Cancer Now, the research and care charity's now-annual designated month for raising awareness and money towards breast cancer research, and support for those affected by the disease.

Apex Pro Fitness owner Danny Ponton said: "This is our latest challenge to raise money and awareness for charity. Our brilliant gym members will be working on the hour, every hour, until the distance is complete, and partners, friends and family are all welcome to contribute to the distance throughout the day.

“We're looking to welcome as many people and teams as possible to raise money for such a worthy cause. Feel free to pop in and support or donate through the day as there will be limited edition Apex merchandise, a raffle and food and drink available throughout the day.”
