One staff member was stabbed and received facial injuries along with a stab wound to the hand, shortly before the escape.

Two other staff members who assaulted by some of the youth offenders, Police Commander Marco Ghedini said.

The group allegedly stole a blue Subaru WRX from the centre car park during the incident.

Mr Ghedini clarified the car was owned by a staff member.

A search was quickly launched with the assistance of a police helicopter, with the Subaru discovered in the Penguin area about 10.20pm.

Penguin is about 85km from the detention centre.

One of the group was located about 1am and was taken back to the detention centre.

Two other detainees were found near Ulverstone just before 7.30am after an alleged carjacking with a knife.

"It involved the youths making an approach to members of the public and commandeering the vehicle from them by threatening those people with the knife," Mr Ghedini said.

"There were no injuries."

Another was taken into custody a few hours later, and a fifth detainee handed himself in at Glenorchy Police Station early on Friday afternoon.

The sixth detainee was found in Hobart, about 230km away from the centre.

The final teenager was found in Smithton a few hours later.
