Two people injured following five-vehicle smash on A194(M) in Gateshead

Two people were taken to hospital after a five-vehicle crash at rush hour in Gateshead.

Emergency services were called to the A194(M) northbound near the Follingsby Roundabout just after 4.30pm on Wednesday.

A total of five vehicles were involved in the crash and police later closed the northbound carriageway as they worked at the scene.

Drivers took a diversion at the exit slip road onto the roundabout and then back onto the A194(M).

Two people were taken to hospital after a number of ambulances arrived at the collision.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We got a call from police at 4.38pm to attend a five-vehicle road traffic collision.

"We sent two ambulances, a Hazardous Area Response Team and an officer.

"We treated one person on scene and took two other patients to hospital with minor injuries."

The road was fully reopened just after 7pm when the vehicles involved were recovered.

At around the same time as the A194(M) crash, three vehicles collided on the A1 northbound near to Kingston Park.

One lane was closed by police officers but there were not believed to be any serious injuries.

The road was reopened just after 6pm when the vehicles were moved off the carriageway.
