Two men in their 20s killed in Brighouse police chase crash

Two men aged in their 20s have died in police chase car crash.

Officers began to pursue a car, believed to be a BMW, in the early hours of Friday.

At around 1am, it ploughed into a road barrier and railings near a bus station.

Two men who were inside are understood to have been pronounced dead at the scene, reports Examiner Live.

The tragedy happened in the Brighouse area of West Yorkshire.

Police watchdogs the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation.

Statements have been taken from two police officers who were in the police vehicle, they said.

Both men haven't been named.

The IOPC said their families have been informed.

The car crashed on Bradford Road, near to Brighouse Bus Station.

The pursuit is understood to have started in Brighouse twon centre, but it's not known how long it lasted.

In a statement, the IOPC said: "The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has begun an investigation following a West Yorkshire Police pursuit.

"The incident happened shortly after 1am on Friday 17 July.

"We understand, at this time, that a West Yorkshire Police vehicle began a pursuit of a car in the centre of Brighouse.

"A short time later the car crashed into a road barrier on Bradford Road.

"The two male occupants of the car, believed to be in their 20s, have since sadly died.

"Their next of kin have been informed and we will be making contact with them to explain our role."

Miranda Biddle, IOPC regional director, said: "This is a tragic incident and my thoughts are with the men’s family and friends and all those affected, including the emergency services in attendance.

"We sent investigators to the scene and to the post-incident procedures, where the two officers in the police vehicle provided statements to us.

"It is mandatory, when someone dies following police contact, that the matter is referred to the IOPC.

"Our role is to establish and examine the circumstances of what happened.

"This work is already underway and West Yorkshire Police is cooperating fully with our enquiries."

West Yorkshire Police said in a statement : "Emergency services are currently at the scene of a serious road traffic collision in Brighouse.

"At 1.07am today a car containing two male occupants was involved in a collision in Bradford Road, in Brighouse town centre.

"Due to the involvement of a police vehicle in the circumstances leading up to the collision, the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct."

"A scene and road closures are in place in Bradford Road and are likely to remain in place for some time."
