A devastated father says the young men shot at Wyndham Vale in Melbourne's south-west overnight are his 29-year-old son and his son's friend.

Deng Atem has told media that his son, Atem Atem, the eldest of eight children, was followed home, shot and killed at the family home in Wyndham Vale in the early hours of Saturday.

Victoria Police said emergency services were called to a property on Carmichael Drive in Wyndham Vale just before 3am, following reports of a shooting.

Police have not formally identified the two men, aged 22 and 29, who died.

Devastated family and friends gathered at the home on Saturday to grieve for two young men killed.

The family dog was also shot dead, father Deng Atem said.

The father's other children were in the family home when the shooting occurred and told him what happened.

He said he believed the shooters followed Atem Atem and his friend home.

Tragedy 'nothing short of horrific'

Atem Atem is a tradesman and was due to visit South Sudan with his mother next month, his father said.

Mr Atem said he moved to Australia from South Sudan in 2003.

Detective Inspector Chris Murray told reporters that the two men shot and killed were "minding their own business" inside the home, when three vehicles with a number of people in them entered Carmichael Drive around 2:30am.

A third person involved in the incident, aged 23, has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police believe the parties may have been known to each other.

The tragic incident would have been "nothing short of horrific" for other occupants of the house, Detective Inspector Murray said.

The local community could be reassured that the incident did not appear to be random, and that there would be a large police presence at the crime scene on Saturday and in coming days, he said.

Police are appealing to anyone who was in the area around 2:30 to 2:40am, who may have seen the three-vehicle convoy or anything else suspicious to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.

"If you know something, say something," Detective Inspector Murray said.
