A 27-year-old man from Ellesmere Port was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault and has since been released under investigation. CCTV and witness enquiries are ongoing and detectives are appealing for anyone with information to get in touch.

The incident happened at around 1.30am on March 24.

Detective Inspector Paul Speight said : “This was a nasty and unprovoked attack on two men who were simply visiting Liverpool for a night out.

“We know there were a significant amount of people in the area at the time of the incident and I would ask anyone with information to please come forward and help us find those responsible. CCTV and witness enquires are being carried out and I would ask anyone who may have been in the Wood Street area to please cast their minds back and let us know if you saw anything suspicious or witnessed the assault.”
