'Two massive things' - Ibrahima Konate sends Liverpool message ahead of next season

Ibrahima Konate is adamant Liverpool will be "super motivated" and have the mentality to respond next season to their disappointing campaign.

The Reds are almost certain to miss out on a top-four berth and now face a battle to ensure European qualification after their longest run without a win in more than six years left them languishing in Premier League mid-table.

Jurgen Klopp's side also had their reigns as League Cup and FA Cup holders ended early while Champions League hopes were dashed in the last 16 by a heavy loss to Real Madrid.

But when asked if it will be difficult for Liverpool to motivate themselves next season after such a disillusioning time, Konate said: "It will be just the opposite. It will be almost an even bigger motivation - super motivated.

"Let's say we are unfortunate not to quite make it into the top four and get in the Champions League (for next season), that still leaves us with two massive things to go for - the league and the Europa League which we might be taking part in.

"It is a big incentive to go on and do something big so why not go for that league title in a season like that?"

Konate added: “We’ve still got the same mentality and desire that Liverpool has had for the last five years. But teams do evolve, don’t they?

“You’re asking the wrong person when it comes to finding new recruits. Our responsibility is to perform on the field. But over the last five years, many players have come and gone - but the whole point behind it is to make us stronger. As players we can only concentrate on what we do on the field.”

Konate, meanwhile, is ready to keep on embracing an extra role in defence after a tactical tweak from Klopp saw Trent Alexander-Arnold used as an inverted right-back and push regularly into midfield last weekend against Arsenal, prompting the Frenchman to act as cover out wide on occasion.

"I had zero concerns when the manager asks you to go and do a slightly different role," he said. "That it is his job, to sort out the team and if we have to readjust in games that is absolutely fantastic. It's a real pleasure to try and help and if he said go on take over from Alisson in goal then I would do that as well!

"We all know Trent is a great player and obviously the closer he gets to the opposition he creates a threat. But I'm only human, I can't cover for him down that side all the time! We have to remember that he is a complete player with lots of assets and abilities, both offensively and defensively, so he won't be forgetting his defensive duties because I can't cover him all the time."
